Common Mistakes to Avoid
I’m a quality compliance manager at a commercial lighting distributor. Every week I review incoming product shipments, verify spec sheets, and reject whatever doesn’t match the order. We handle a lot of Acuity Brands fixtures and LED replacement parts—at least 200 SKUs a year across downlight fixtures, controls, and retrofit components.
Most of the order mistakes I see are not caused by bad products. They’re caused by small specification gaps that turn into rework, delays, and dead inventory. So this isn’t a general “how to buy lighting” article; it’s the checklist we use internally when someone on our purchasing team is sourcing Acuity Brands lighting in Canada. If you’re a contractor, facility manager, or buying agent, it applies to your next order too.
Here are the seven checks, roughly in the order we do them.
1. Confirm the Exact Part Number — Not Just the Product Family
Acuity Brands has a large portfolio: Lithonia, Mark, Gotham, and others. Within one downlight series, there can be dozens of configurations. The first thing people do is search for a replacement by photo or by memory. That’s how wrong parts get ordered.
Look for the catalog number on the fixture label, not just the series name. On downlight fixtures, the label is usually inside the housing, behind the trim. Take a photo with your phone, then compare it to the current spec sheet on Acuity’s site. The label will have something like “PLT6 40L 35K” or a longer design number. Match that exactly.

2. Verify Canadian Approval Marks
For anything installed in Canada, you need a certification mark such as CSA or cUL. On Acuity fixtures, this is printed on the label. The same applies to LED replacement parts and retrofit kits.
Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: a product can be perfectly compliant in the US and still be a problem in Canada, because the approval bodies are separate. A UL listing is not automatically a CSA listing. We had a project in 2023 where the fixtures were UL-certified but not CSA, and the provincial inspector flagged them. The job was delayed for three weeks while the distributor swapped out the fixtures.
Checkpoint: Is the product marked with CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 or an equivalent cUL certification?
3. Check the Photometric Specs — Not Just Wattage
When you’re specifying downlight fixtures, don’t stop at the wattage. Compare delivered lumens, CCT (usually 3000K or 4000K for commercial spaces), CRI, and DLC certification. If energy rebates are part of the project, DLC Premium status can matter for eligibility.
The question everyone asks is “how many watts?” The question they should ask is “what are the delivered lumens and CRI?” A 20W downlight with 1800 delivered lumens is not the same as one with 1500. The extra wattage might be disappearing into heat instead of light.
For color consistency across a large installation, look for a 3-step MacAdam ellipse rating. It’s an industry-standard way to measure how tightly grouped the LED color is. Two fixtures from different production batches can be “same Kelvin” but visibly different if the binning tolerance is loose.

4. Match the Driver to the Controls
This is where replacement orders often go sideways. If you’re replacing an LED board or a driver, the new driver must be compatible with the fixture’s control system. Is it 0-10V dimming? DALI? A simple on/off? And does the fixture have a DTL dark-to-light photocontrol?
It might seem basic, but it still surprises me how many people skip this. A 0-10V dimming driver and a DTL photocontrol do different things. The driver has to support whatever signal the controller sends.
And this is as good a place as any to answer the question: what is a toggle light switch? It’s the standard single-pole switch that opens or closes the power circuit. In a fixture with a photocontrol, that toggle switch usually stays in the on position. The photocontroller decides when the light comes on. If your electrician wires the photocontroller to a switched circuit, the sensor won’t work correctly. That’s a very common reason for lights that stay on all day.
Checkpoint: Does the driver and photocontrol combination match the fixture’s specified control protocol?
5. Measure the Physical Fit
Downlight fixtures are typically identified by cutout diameter: 4-inch, 6-inch, etc. But the trim depth and housing height also matter. A trim that is 1/8 inch too wide will not fit a standard 6-inch housing, and a retrofit LED module might not fit if the driver is thicker than the old one.
I can’t tell you how many times we’ve received “matching” replacement trims that didn’t actually fit. In 2024, we rejected a batch of 40 trims because the outer diameter was off. Looked right in the photo, but the installer couldn’t get them to seat properly.
So measure the existing housing’s opening and depth. Compare those numbers to the new part’s documented dimensions. Don’t rely on the old trim sitting next to you, because different buildings get mixed products over the years.

6. Do a Spotlight Branding Check
“Spotlight branding” is more of a marketing term, but it’s also a quality control step. When we buy Acuity-branded replacement parts, we check the packaging and logo. Genuine Acuity parts have consistent branding, with the catalog number and UPC printed in the expected place. Generic or “compatible” parts can look similar, but they often have a different bar code, a slightly different logo color, or missing product codes.
If your contract specifies Acuity Brands replacements, a look-alike part can create warranty issues and inspection problems. On a job, the electrical inspector might not notice, but the project owner might. And if you’re maintaining a large inventory, non-standard packaging makes procurement and stock rotation less efficient.
Spotlight branding, put simply, is your final visual confirmation that the product in hand is the one with the warranty and technical support behind it. If the product page shows a clear label and the box in front of you looks different, pause and verify.

7. Confirm Lead Time and Sourcing
Acuity’s manufacturing footprint in places like Crawfordsville and Conyers, plus its Canadian distribution network, means many standard items are available within a few days. But special orders can take several weeks. On a large project, that changes your whole construction schedule.
We’ve cut our own procurement turnaround from 5 days to 2 days just by standardizing our favorite SKUs and keeping a list of what’s in stock. That efficiency matters when a client calls with a leak. (I really should write down every emergency we’ve handled—it’s the same set of parts most of the time.)
Before you finalize the purchase order, ask: Is this a stock item or a special order? If it’s special order, get an estimated ship date in writing. Then add a buffer for customs, because international shipments can be unpredictable.
Checkpoint: Is the SKU available from a Canadian distributor, and does the lead time fit your schedule?
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even with this checklist, I see people skipping steps when deadlines get tight. Here are the mistakes that keep coming up:
- Ordering “compatible” parts without checking the control compatibility. Physical fit is not enough.
- Assuming every Acuity product is automatically CSA approved. It’s still worth checking the label.
- Ignoring the photocontrol behavior. With a DTL photocontrol, the toggle switch is usually just a disconnect; the sensor drives the light. Explain this to your electrician before the final walkthrough.
The goal here is simple: fewer mistakes, less downtime, and more predictable costs. A 10-minute check before ordering is cheaper than a 40-unit redo after installation. And in commercial lighting, rework is never just materials—it’s labor, schedule, and occupant frustration.
