The honest answer: there is no single number, because wattage measures power consumed, not brightness. If you’re replacing bulbs in a chandelier, the number you actually need is lumens.

An old 40-watt incandescent chandelier bulb produced roughly 450 lumens. An LED replacement that produces the same light will draw about 4 to 6 watts. An old 60-watt incandescent produced roughly 800 lumens, and an equivalent LED usually draws 7 to 9 watts. That’s why an LED bulb labeled “40W equivalent” can use only 5W and still look normal in a fixture labeled 40W max.

For typical candelabra sockets, I usually look for an E12 LED candle bulb around 4.5W, 4.8W, or 5.5W. Physical size matters too. A fat A19 bulb may say the right wattage but won’t fit in a narrow chandelier arm.

Before you buy a full set, remember that not every LED is dimmable, and not every dimmable LED works with your wall dimmer. If your chandelier is on a dimmer, choose bulbs marked “dimmable” and check the compatibility list if one exists. Otherwise, you’ll have bulbs that flicker at low dim levels and you’ll have to order again.

How To Tell Which Scenario You’re In

If you’re still not sure, answer these three questions.

Is there a manufacturer label with a model number and a known replacement part? If yes, start with Scenario 1. Branded fixtures with active warranties are the safest cases for exact Acuity Brands LED replacement parts.

Is the fixture decorative, imported, or impossible to identify? You’re probably in Scenario 2. Find the driver label and match its output. Don’t force an OEM part category onto a fixture that never used it.

There are times when my team can’t source an exact part quickly. In those cases, a universal driver is our backup plan. But we never order it before verifying the failure mode and the fixture type. My own view is simple: low price is only valuable after you include the cost of being wrong. The cheapest component becomes the most expensive repair when it fails on a deadline.
