There's No Universal Answer for Recessed Lighting in a Kitchen
If someone tells you there's a single formula for placing recessed lighting in a kitchen — 4 feet from the walls, 4 feet apart, centered on the room — they've only ever installed it in one type of kitchen. I know because I used to be that person.
My first two years in this business, I applied the same grid to every project. Some kitchens looked great. Others looked flat, cold, and wrong, and I couldn't see the pattern from the inside of a ladder. Eventually the pattern got expensive enough that I had to pay attention. I'm an electrical contractor who's handled lighting orders for 7 years. I've personally made and documented 43 significant mistakes on those orders, totaling roughly $26,000 in wasted budget and rework. Scenario 1: Galley Kitchens — Offset the Row, Don't Center It
The classic mistake I made in 2017: I placed recessed fixtures down the centerline of a narrow galley kitchen. I knew I should run the beam calculation against the actual counter depth, but I thought “it's a simple rectangle, what are the odds?” The odds caught up with me on Thanksgiving morning, when the homeowner called to say her prep area was in shadow every time she leaned forward. The service visit cost $350 and a chunk of my pride.
The problem in a galley kitchen is the corridor geometry. A centered row of fixtures creates a follow-spot that follows the cook around. Place the fixtures too far to the side and you're lighting the backsplash, not the person.
What works instead:
- Offset the fixture row toward the main prep counter by 12–18 inches. The sink counter is usually the right one to aim toward.
- Space the fixtures at roughly ceiling height intervals along that offset line. For an 8-foot ceiling, that's 8 feet between fixtures — not the 4-foot spacing that still shows up in online guides.
- Use 4-inch or 5-inch apertures, not 6-inch. In a narrow room, 6-inch trims look chunky and throw scalloped shadows across the upper cabinets.
- Put that row on a dimmer. I've done maybe 40 galley layouts. Maybe 45, I'd have to count my invoice log. The ones that earned the best feedback were the ones where the homeowner could drop the lights to 20% after dinner and still find their way around.
One more thing specific to galley kitchen orders: fixture delivery certainty matters more than fixture price. If your contractor has closed the ceiling and scheduled the cabinet install, a trim that arrives in 10 days isn't cheaper than one that arrives in two days. Scenario 2: Open-Concept Kitchens With an Island — Layer the Light, Don't Flood It
The phrase “we want recessed lighting everywhere” is the most expensive sentence an open-concept homeowner can say. A flat grid of downlights removes visual contrast. The room has light in every corner, and somehow it still feels like a hospital corridor.
For open kitchens with an island, I design in three distinct layers instead of one blanket pattern:
Perimeter task layer. Recessed fixtures 12–18 inches from the cabinet faces. This layer exists for food prep and should be aimed at the counters, not the floor.
Island layer. Either a row of adjustable recessed fixtures (3 or 4 heads) or a decorative fixture. If the island has seating, read the next paragraph carefully.
Ambient layer. Whatever spill light arrives from the two layers above, plus a dimmer. Most open kitchens don't need dedicated ambient cans.
If there are stools at the island: an oval chandelier is usually a better answer than recessed fixtures. I'll say that plainly because some homeowners and more than a few electricians think “island light” means a round pendant. An oval fixture matches the geometry of a rectangular island, and it floats above the seating line without blinding anyone. Recessed cans over a seating island sit nearly overhead of the person on a stool — every time they look down at their plate, they're staring into glare.

The fixtures were spaced correctly, the wiring was clean, and the result was a disaster. The wide beam spread from the 6-inch trims flattened every shadow in the room and made the ceiling feel like it was closing in. The client was kind about it. I was not.
What I should have done from day one:
- Use 4-inch fixtures, not 6-inch. The smaller aperture produces a tighter beam spread, which reads as intentional and crisp instead of oppressive on low ceilings.
- Specify IC-rated housings if there's insulation above. That's a code requirement in most residential settings (IC means the housing can safely touch insulation), not an upcharge someone is trying to sell you.
- Use adjustable gimbal trims and aim them at the work surface. In a low ceiling, you can't avoid putting the fixture close to people's heads. The less time they spend looking up at it, the better.
- Don't cram the spacing. On an 8-foot ceiling, the beam covers roughly a 4-to-5-foot diameter at counter height. Fixtures 5–6 feet apart will overlap enough to prevent dark pools without creating a dotted line across the room.
If a beam or duct runs across the kitchen, don't try to wrap the layout around it in a game of visual Tetris. Reroute the circuit, put a junction box on one side, and keep the fixture line continuous. The worst layouts I've walked into are the ones where lights stop and restart on either side of a beam like a paragraph that lost its middle sentence. That fix costs more than doing it right initially, and it still looks wrong.
For reference, the Illuminating Engineering Society recommends roughly 30–50 foot-candles on kitchen task surfaces (ies.org). With 4-inch LED housings, that usually works out to 3 or 4 fixtures per 10 linear feet of counter. But I'll be honest: the foot-candle number matters less than beam placement. One well-aimed adjustable trim is worth more than four randomly located fixed trims, regardless of what a light meter says.
Scenario 4: Kitchens With a Dining Nook — Don't Light a Table Like a Lab Bench
The dining nook problem shows up quarterly in my service request log. A kitchen with a small table in the corner gets the same recessed fixtures spread across the entire ceiling. The work zones look great. The table looks like the subject of an interrogation. Nobody can explain why.
A table should be lit by its own fixture — a pendant or chandelier sized to roughly two-thirds of the table's width and hung 28–32 inches above the tabletop. If the table is oval or rectangular, an oval chandelier matches the footprint better than a round piece that floats awkwardly over the center axis.
My recommendation here is direct: skip recessed lighting over a dedicated dining nook entirely. If the room needs ambient light during breakfast, put one dimmable recessed fixture on its own switch, not a row of cans. The table fixture does the heavy lifting; the recessed fixture just keeps the room from going black.
This lesson cost me in Q1 2024. I delivered a kitchen layout with six fixtures in a grid directly over a 4-person dining table. The client approved the plan, the install proceeded, and when they sent me a photo of the finished room, the caption was “it feels like a cafeteria.” We removed four fixtures and moved two to the corners. The change order ran $740, and I covered the fixture cost out of pocket because it was my design error. How to Identify Your Scenario Before You Drill a Single Hole
Kitchens don't always belong to exactly one scenario. A galley with a corner table is both Scenario 1 and Scenario 4. An open concept with 8-foot ceilings touches Scenarios 2 and 3. That's normal. The important part is knowing where to start.
- Measure the ceiling height. Under 8.5 feet? Start with Scenario 3 and scale everything down.
- Measure the narrowest width. Under 8 feet? Start with Scenario 1. Wider than that, and Scenario 2 becomes more relevant.
- Identify the prep area. Where do the cutting, washing, and cooking actually happen? Those counters get the task layer, always.
- Find every place someone sits. Island stools or a dining table mean you need a separate fixture for that seating, whether it's an oval chandelier or a dedicated dimmer zone.
- Look up before you plan. Beams, soffits, ducts, and recessed soffits all override the spacing rules you planned on paper.
Let me be honest about the risk calculation that's behind all of this. When I'm tempted to shave $900 off a project by using a fixture line that isn't compatible with the control system, I now ask myself: is this saving worth potentially ripping out parts of a finished ceiling?
