Not decorative lighting. Not trendy lighting. The kind that gets installed in ceiling grids and parking lots and hallways. Functional lighting that someone has to order, track, receive, and make sure actually works once installed.
And I have a strong opinion about it: the work you do before placing the order matters more than anything the vendor does after.
I'd rather spend 45 minutes verifying a product's compatibility and specifications than spend 6 weeks dealing with fixtures that don't do what we needed them to do. That's not a slogan. That's what our 2024 experience taught me.

The question everyone asks is: "what's the best price?" The question they should ask is: "what exactly am I getting, and will it work with what we already have?"

But when a driver needed replacing six months in, we had the part in three days. Returns are not free. Returns are not fast. And returns don't cover the cost of a conference room that's dark for a week, or a parking lot that isn't safely lit.
I'm not saying every $12 LED bulb needs the same deep verification as a $4,000 building control system. I'm saying the habit of verifying is what protects you when the stakes are high. The checklist I created after our first Zigbee incident has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework and restocking fees.
Is that number exact? Not precisely. I don't track every avoided failure. But I know what the failures cost when we didn't check.
