- In Canada, ask for CSA certification and the provincial utility list.
- Get a lead time and spare parts quote before committing.
This isn't a magic formula, but it's better than comparing spreadsheet prices only. I've had a $200 cheap fixture become a $600 problem because the driver wasn't compatible with the control system. Note to self: check driver compatibility before ordering.
Where my experience doesn't apply
I've only worked on North American commercial and multi-tenant projects. If you're specifying a residential chandelier or a single solar street light for a remote ranch, your cost model is different. But the reason to choose them should be total cost, compatibility, and parts availability, not a claim that they're always cheaper. An informed customer asks better questions, and that's exactly why I keep writing this stuff down.
