- Control compatibility. If you have any existing lighting controls—photocells, motion sensors, timers—verify compatibility before buying. Get it in writing.
- Replacement part availability. Can you buy just the driver separate from the fixture? If not, you're buying the whole thing again when a component fails.
- Total lumen maintenance. Not all LEDs maintain their brightness equally. Look for L70 or L80 ratings—these tell you how many hours until the light drops to 70% or 80% of its original output.
I still use budget-friendly options for non-critical spaces—storage rooms, hallways—but for any space where people spend more than 15 minutes at a time, I now spend the extra 20-30% for a fixture that I can trust. (And that I can find replacement parts for.)
One More Thing
Per the FTC's Green Guides, if a fixture claims to be "energy efficient" or "recyclable," those claims need to be substantiated. I've learned to ask for documentation, not just a label. A fixture that is truly efficient will have clear, third-party verified specs—not just marketing language on the box.
I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining the differences between fixture grades to a colleague than deal with another mismatched order. An informed buyer asks better questions—and makes faster, smarter decisions.
Cheap is seductive. But experience—and a few expensive mistakes—taught me that the cheapest fixture costs more than you think. The question isn't whether you should spend more. It's whether you can afford not to.
